Skin Care Serum

A skin care serum is generally thinner than creams or lotions and is designed to deliver nutrients down to the deeper layers of the skin.

After applying a serum you should always use a moisurizing cream to seal in moisture. A skin serum easily penetrates the skin then can leave it with the feeling of being a little dry and unprotected. The purpose of skin care serums is not to moisturize your skin but deliver antioxidants and other anti-aging nutrients deep into the skin layers where they can provide the most benefit.

After your serum has penetrated, you apply a moisturizer to seal in water and provide a protective over your serum and its beneficial ingredients. Serums and skin creams are excellent for older skin when used together.

A high quality skin care serum often contains ingredients that can spoil or oxidize quickly and must be stored carefully. This is why many serums come in small capsules (ampoules) meant for one time use and are best used as soon as you open them.

Cosmetic Serums are highly concentrated skin care products that are either water based or oil base. Check to see which ingredient is listed first adn you will know which type your serum is. Serums are concentrated with anti-aging and skin repair ingredients designed for quicker and more dramatic improvements in your skin than lotions or creams. But, for a serum to be effective it needs to contain enough of the critical ingredients to make a noticeable difference.

Many serums have too little of the essential ingredients and contain ingredients that moisturize or leave your skin feeling soft because these serums sell well; however, that is not what you want. You need to use a high quality serum that contains a high percentage of ingredients proven to work.

While many high-end, expensive skin care products have excellent serums, there are a few inexpensive serums that are excellent for those on a budget.

One of the main purposes of the a skin care serum is to build collagen. Collagen is the skin protein that keeps your skin thick and elastic. Collagen is naturally lost during the aging process and a good serum can help your skin build collagen and slow the aging process.

A good serum should soak into your skin and seem to disappear within a few minutes. It’s not meant to leave your face greasy or soft like a moisturizer.

Different skin serums serve different purposes and no one serum is perfect for all skin types and conditions.

Common water based serums: Contain water soluble ingredients that fight aging and skin damage from free radicals.

Look for these ingredients:

  • vitamin C
  • vitamin Bs
  • copper
  • oligopepetides
  • resveratrol
  • carnosine
  • amino acids
  • These are antioxidants and fight skin aging. A water based serum will not leave your skin smooth or creamy, but the ingredients will penetrate down to the lower layer where they are needed to provide any benefit. Follow with an oil based serum and moisturizer if you skin is dry and needs protection.

Common oil based serums: The first ingredient will not be water but moisturizers.

    Look for these ingredients:

  • lipids
  • essential fatty acids
  • linoleic acid
  • Omega 3
  • retinol
  • vitamin E
  • ceramides
  • These serums create a lipid barrier that trap water into your skin to keep it soft and supple. They also include excellent anti-aging ingredients that will do wonders for your skin.
