Rosacea Skin Care: Caring for Sensitive Skin
Rosacea skin care products need to be gentle because skin with rosacea is particularly sensitive and can easily be irritated by harsh treatment, chemicals and other ingredients in skin care products.
Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder that affects millions and can cause embarrassing and uncomfortable symptoms.
What causes rosacea?
While there are several theories, the exact cause is still not known but there appears to be a genetic component as it often runs in families. It seems to be the most frequent in fair-skinned people; particularly those of Irish, English, Scottish, Scandinavian and Welsh descent. It’s more common in women and generally appears after the age of 30.
Symptoms of Rosacea...
Skin flushing and redness when you're not embarrassed are common. Rosacea affects the face therefore its symptoms are difficult to miss. The main areas affected include cheeks and nose, but the forehead and areas around the mouth can also be involved.
Symptoms are characterized by patches of red, flush skin that may burn or sting or itch. In some cases, the skin will also become inflamed. There is no consistency among patients as to where on the face the patches will develop and whether they'll appear on one or both sides simultaneously. Skin type can be characterized by dry and flaky, or normal or oily.
Bumps and pimples are other symptoms of rosacea. Similar in appearance to acne, these skin blemishes are not the result of blocked pores. In fact, rosacea is frequently referred to incorrectly as adult acne. And equally unfortunate, rosacea is often misdiagnosed as sunburn which often delays proper treatment.
There are several triggers that can make rosacea worse. When you identify your personal triggers you can avoid them while treating your rosacea.
Rosacea Triggers:
If you take a look at the many triggers, you see it’s impossible to avoid all of these and live a normal life. You may just want to avoid your triggers when you can and rely on treatment, makeup and rosacea skin care to keep the condition under control.
Treatment for Rosacea:
Antibiotics. Standard medical treatment includes oral antibiotics for quick relief and topical medications that can be used long-term.
LasersIn cases where redness is severe, laser therapy can be used to cauterize the blood vessels that cause the redness.
Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments are commonly used today to erase the small, red capillaries and redness associated with rosacea as well as other skin conditions that cause discoloration. The intense pulsed light uses various wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin and heats the blood vessels causing them to collapse. These light based therapies are still considered experimental and not covered by most insurance companies, therefore they can be expensive.
IPL can be effective at eliminating redness but may not stop the flushing or involuntary blushing reactions common with rosacea. These light therapies have not been shown to be more effective than oral antibiotics and are more expensive, but they can be a good alternative for those not wanting to use antibiotics. They appear to be safe when used by a doctor or highly trained professional.
Rosacea skin care products are designed to be gentle, non-irritating and help soothe and calm the redness and irritation.
