Minimize Pores: Can Anything Reduce Enlarged Pores?

Many women are looking for ways to minimize pores and improve the appearance of their skin. If you have enlarged pores, chances are you have tried many things to fix this problem or cover it up with makeup.

Is there anything you can do to minimize pores?

Unfortunately people with acne and/or oily skin usually develop larger pores because the pores expand with the excess oil. There is nothing that can shrink the actually size of your pores, but there are some things you can do to minimize the appearance of your pores.

The bad news is pores get even larger with age. As your skin looses some of its elasticity when collagen breaks down with age and sun damage. Enlarged pores are another nasty effect of too much sun; not just wrinkles and sun spots.

Pore size is due to factors you don’t have much control over such as excessive oily skin and genetics, but there are things you can do to improve the situation and prevent them from getting worse.

  • Clean your pores of oil and debris
  • Use toner with exfoliating agents to dissolve sebum and remove dead skin cells
  • Microdermabrasion, exfoliating cleansers are good for oily skin with large pores
  • Avoid any oil or moisturizing products in the T zone and any oily skin areas
  • Chemical peels – glycolic acid
  • Pores will get larger as you age and your skin loses collagen and elasticity. Anything you can do to build your collagen will also help minimize pores.

A good anti-aging skin care serum is an excellent way to build your skin’s collagen and improve your skin’s appearance including your pores. For oily skin, stick with a water-based skin serum that won’t clog pores or cause acne breakouts. You can use lipid based serums and oily moisturizers only for your eye area and any areas that are continually dry.

Some laser treatments also claim to build collagen and reduce the appearance of pores. While some of these treatments may be effective, the results are not permanent and will need to be repeated as you age. Laser treatments can be quite helpful if you can afford them, but these treatments are rarely covered by insurance and therefore not practical for everyone.
